Too many families and vulnerable adults are evicted in the city every year. In 2015, 22,000 households were evicted. Over 200,000 people were sued in Housing Court for nonpayment of rent, and over 30,000 were sued for eviction for other reasons. Almost all of those tenants went to court without a lawyer, faced a landlord with a lawyer, and had to cope with unfamiliar language, the court’s harsh, noisy and dirty atmosphere, and the hectic actions of vastly over-worked clerks and judges.
