Ban Tenant Screening Practices

Tenants who apply for an apartment often have to submit to a “credit” or background check.

Landlords submit their names it to a tenant screening company for a report which shows them: was the tenant ever in Housing Court? Does the tenant have any outstanding judgments from Housing Court or other courts? This practice unfairly bars low income tenants from getting new apartments – they are much more likely to have been in a Housing Court proceeding in the past.
